Parents and carers

Road trauma is the leading cause of death and the second most frequent cause of hospitalisation among children in Australia (World Health Organisation, 2008).

Parents and carers play a critical role in ensuring their children - whether infants, children or young adults - are safer on the road.

Parents can help their children be safe in and around traffic by:

  • Role modelling safe behaviour – for example, wearing a helmet when riding; choosing the safest place to cross the road and driving responsibly
  • Supervising and educating young children in the road environment.
  • Supervising and supporting young drivers
